Attention Contractors and Building Owners and/or Managers:
You are required to obtain a permit from the Fire Department when you disconnect, install or modify any commercial or monitored automatic fire protection system in the Town of Tewksbury.  Fire protection systems include fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems.  Failure to obtain a permit may result in the issuance of a Fire Code Violation Notice pursuant to MGL c.148A and 527 CMR.  A first offense violation carries a $100 fine; second offense a $500 fine; and third or subsequent offenses a $1,000 fine.

This Youtube video link provides a humorous view of residential sprinklers.  Residential sprinkler design focuses on life safety and in most cases utilizes the household water supply line.  They discharge water in the area of the fire to prevent the un-survivable condition of flashover from occurring.  When properly designed and maintained they can also limit fire, smoke, and heat damage in addition to their primary function of saving lives.
