Sharps Disposal Current options for disposal of "sharps" (e.g., medical syringes) include drop-off at the Tewksbury Health Dept (999 Whipple Rd.) and the Central Fire Station next to Town Hall. The container must only contain sharps and must be rigid, leak proof, shatterproof, and puncture-resistant (consider something like a thick plastic detergent bottle). There is a fee per container which covers the cost of disposal. 2011 fees: 2 gallon container (maximum size) - $15; 1 gallon container
- $8; quart and under fee - $5. Cash payments are not accepted. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Town of Tewksbury. Collection hours: Health Dept. - M-Th 8-9:30 am and 2:30-4 pm; Central Fire Station - M-F 8 am to 4 pm. For more information, please contact the Board of Health. Another option is with the Lowell Health Department at 341 Pine Street in Lowell. For further information, call 978-970-4010 Ext. (9) 4304. |

TRASH vs RECYCLING
While the bulk of the information at this site pertains to recycling (there just happens to be more to present), you will also find answers to most of your trash questions.
Your first stop should be the Calendar page. Read both pages - if you don't find the answer you are looking for, you may call Allied Waste (800-442-9006) or contact one of the TRC members through the link above. |
Recycling Enforcement Coordinator Report - 2010
As part of a grant from the state and in coordination with Billerica and Chelmsford, Tewksbury utilized the services of Robert Keough for assistance with recycling enforcement. Bob tracked what people were doing in each town and provided information to those who may not have fully understood the recycling program. His close-out report for Tewksbury is attached here. |
Allied Waste Recycling Facility 9/29/10 Field Trip Photos!

Automated Trash Collection
- Everyone gets one blue trash cart (most households 64 gal; some get 35 gal; some multi-unit building complexes will have dumpsters for trash and recycling). Each cart will be given a serial number so that it stays with the house it was given. It is suggested that you stencil your house number on there so that it is obviously yours (less apt to be stolen). Carts are on wheels and are easy to move.
- If needed, additional carts may be purchased to cover the cost of additional disposal. People that have purchased additional carts in other towns have typically ended up returning them part way through the year, as they realized that they could get by with only one. [$145 for 64 gal. and $120 for 35 gal.]
- “Special Occasion” stickers will be available from Allied Waste at a additional cost, so if you know that you are having a large party and there is just no way that you will be able to spread the trash over a couple of weeks, call Allied Waste (800-442-9006) to purchase a sticker. [$5 per sticker]
- Automated collection is for trash only, not recycling. Recycling remains any containers you want (you may use your old trash can). If you decide to place all recyclables in one container, please place commingled items on the bottom and paper/cardboard on top (or in a separate container).
- Small bulky items (couches, chairs, rolls of cut-up carpet, etc.) which are too big for the trash cart and are not part of our appliance/CRT pickup contract will be collected by Allied Waste at no cost, but based on a scheduled pickup. A list of typical items is expected to be published, but when in doubt, call Allied Waste (800-442-9006) and schedule a pickup.

WHAT'S NEW??
02/16/13 - New info posted/updated on home page.
03/09/10 - Packing peanuts are often the most difficult type of EPS to recycle. Their simplest reuse is in another package you need to ship. You can also donate them to UPS, FedEx, STAPLES or other shipping stores, who will gladly reuse the clean material. Not sure where to go? Call the automated, 24-hour Peanut Hot line at 800-828-2214 or visit www.loosefillpackaging.com to find a site near you that will reuse them.
Read more in the Lowell Sun and check out the information in our other pages here at the website.
02/02/10 - Welcome to the Tewksbury Recycling Committee's revised web site! It will take us a little while to get up to speed on the new software and add back a lot of the information that was on our previous site, so please bear with us during "construction." |
